Lesson Plans
Purpose-To present students with the basic elements of a short story and illustrate how each element contributes to the development of the story. This lesson can be used before or after reading a short story or before starting a creative writing assignment.
Purpose- To have students identify the similarities and differences between two characters. In this case "Compare" refers to similarities and "Contrast" refers to differences. This activity will help students define their perception of the character (preferably major characters) and distinguish between characteristics such as personality traits and physical traits.
Purpose-To identify the possible cause and effect of an event within a story and assist the student in understanding why the event occurred and how it ultimately affects the rest of the story.
Purpose- To determine whether the student has fully understood the plot development of the story after reading. Present the questions to the student before reading so that he or she may be an active reader. An active reader is a reader with a plan and a reason for reading.
Purpose- To relate writing to the real world by illustrating how supporting statements with relevant details can strengthen an overall message, while leaving such details out can weaken an argument. This lesson can be used when teaching expository writing, persuasive writing, supporting details, class discussion, fact and opinion, strong and weak argument.
